EROMS: Tell me about you

JAKE: My name is Jake Okechuku Effoduh. I am very passionate about law and human development.

 EROMS: You studied law, how did the media job with BBC media action come about?

JAKE: 9 years ago, I heard about an audition and I went for it. I had never been on radio at that time; neither did I possess any skills in broadcasting. Being on radio was one of the things I desired to do and I was lucky to have been selected to host FLAVA, a youth lifestyle radio show at that time. That was how my career in radio started. I was 19 years old at that time and I learnt on the job. I anchored FLAVA for 7 years. I am still anchoring a radio show under the BBC Media Action and its called TALK YOUR OWN: A governance radio magazine giving Nigerians a platform to air their views on governance-related issues in the country.  You should tune in on any of your favorite radio stations across the country.

 EROMS: Compared to many youths in Nigeria, I must say to a very large extent you are very successful, what can you attribute to that?

JAKE: That’s a huge compliment. Thank you. I don’t have a car, a house or hundreds of thousands of naira in my account, and even if I did, it still wouldn’t qualify me as a successful person. Success for me is simply showing up and doing my best; believing in myself whether I fail or not, to have goals in life and to surround myself with the things and the people that make me happy.  

 EROMS: On your Instagram handle you talked about working from home as you do in your office. I see from your page also that you do a lot of community service, you mentor young people, you handle high profile cases in court and you are also the Curator of the Abuja Global Shapers Hub, How do you handle all that?

JAKE: Any opportunity I find to serve, I embrace it. Be it at home, in a courtroom, a village, studio, street or hospital, I am always happy to use my skills and time to serve others.

 EROMS: What’s your view on the social Media Bill as a Human Rights Lawyer?

JAKE: It is actually termed the Frivolous Petition Prohibition Bill but I am happy it has been dubbed the #AntiSocialMediaBill because section 3 of this proposed law will indirectly erode the fundamental right to freedom of expression and the press. It echoes the infamous Protection Against False Accusations Decree, Decree 4 of 1984, which was during the military era and has been called one of the most repressive laws ever passed. In my estimation, if it is passed, it will put fear in people especially journalists and activists who may worry whether the information they share with others will be caught under the law or not. The bill posits that any false abusive statement with intent to set the public against a public official or institution either via ‘WhatsApp, tweet or any social media post’ will attract 2 years imprisonment or 2 million naira fine. People are not comfortable with the mention of ‘WhatsApp, tweet or any social media post’ and feel it is opposed to sections 39 of our constitution, which protects every citizen’s freedom of opinion and expression, as well as section 37, which protects privacy and correspondence of citizens. It may affect the freedom to criticize people in government and institutions on social media.

EROMS:  How do you relax when you are not working?

JAKE: Eating and watching comedies

EROMS: If given the freedom to raid any Nigerian celebrity house for Clothes and shoes who will that be?

JAKE: Mai Atafo

 EROMS: What advice do you have for the many Nigerian youth who are Unemployed?

JAKE: Whatever your hands find to do, do it well.
