As the festivity continues parents in Edo, Benin and Ekpoma in particular decries the constant harassment of their Male Children by the Police,
They disguise as arresting them for interrogation but they do that to extort money from them all in the witch hunting of yahoo yahoo (internet fraudster) boys off the street thus, arresting every well dressed hough that cross their part mistaken them for Yahoo yahoo boys.
youths avoids returning home for the festive period because of fear of the constant bullying by uniform men and who most times even frame them up, thus collecting all they have.
Oselumese an Abuja based youth recount how he was on his way to market square in Epkoma Edo state to shop for his younger ones for the Christmas, when up to 4 bike men surrounded him , he was scared at same time confused at some point, telling his bike man to proceed they may be kidnappers of some sort until he saw among them ,the last bike that came a Police officer who said “come down you are under arrest”, for what to his puzzle, the Police said “when you get to the police station you will know, still not trusting if they were real police men, after they showed their various ID card he succumb, on getting to the Police station to his shock, they reported their Boss He is a Yahoo Yahoo boy, caught and arrested.
Still shocked, he Politely told the Police Officer that’s false telling the Police what Happened, it was obvious they had concluded on the story to fabricate, and that they in turn are all in it, as they refuse to listen but shouted at him, he said.
Refusing to put down statement that he is a yahoo yahoo boy and a cult boy, They made him take off his Shirt and sit on the floor, saying he is wasting his time and theirs if he refuse to comply.
Some minutes later, as it is a communal town family n friends have gathered at the police station and passers by who saw what happened and may have put a call through to his family. They all testify and confirming the words of Ose, hence his release finally after much argument and Protest by family and friends.
It was also reported in Benin last week this festive Period, that some youth taking them self out had their car seized , the list goes on …..Basically when you look tushed , flashy, clean , well dressed or drive a clean ride and a youth, you are a target to be arrested and exploited as it is automatically believed you are one of the yahoo yahoo boys.
Parents in this towns have lamented how they have miss their ward, and how they keep telling them the Police with their constant bullying will not allow them visit home and celebrate and be with family once at least in a year. I personally feel this is so wrong, what if a mother have just a child, a youth and a son who happen to be any where in Nigeria and always look forward to been with that son every Xmas and New year yet that can’t happen because of the fear of constant Police Harassment and Exploitation.
To me this is very wrong, they are suppose to serve and protect. what do you think?
